This is the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. Vietnam has 54 officially recognised ethnic groups, and the museum presents the life and culture of all of them.

The museum project was approved in December 1987, and construction ran from 1987 to 1995. It opened to the public on 12 November 1997 and belongs to the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.

The museum is in Cầu Giấy, about 8 km from central Hanoi. The grounds cover about 44,000 square metres, with about 2,000 square metres of indoor permanent exhibition and about 20,000 square metres of open-air exhibition.

The main building, called the Bronze Drum, was designed by architect Hà Đức Lịnh, a member of the Tày ethnic group, in the shape of a Đông Sơn bronze drum. The interior was designed by French architect Véronique Dollfus. Inside, artifacts and photographs introduce the life of each group.

Behind it is a large open-air area with traditional buildings, such as a Ba Na communal house and an Ede long house on stilts from the Central Highlands. There are also houses of the Chăm, Dao, H'Mông, Việt and other groups.

In 2013 a new kite-shaped building opened, devoted to the cultures of Southeast Asia, designed by architects Nguyễn Mạnh Thu and Doãn Thế Trung.

The museum is large, so allow time to see both the main building and the open-air area.
